Q&A with Michael

How did you get into taking pictures for a living?

When I was in high school I got a job working in a camera shop, and that was it, I was addicted.  I studied photography in college, moved to NYC and received my true education assisting many very talented photographers.  I've been in the "biz" ever since...

Tell me about your 360º photography studio setup! For starters, what kind of camera do you shoot with?

I shoot mainly with my Canon 5DMIII, but I have a Phase One system if needed.  I'm lucky to have a 4000 sq/ft space near Union Square in NYC.  It is divided into 2 studios, one approximately 2500 sq/ft and a smaller 1000 sq/ft space.  Office space and a kitchen make up the rest of the facility.  I also shoot video, and as a result I've assembled quite the collection of equipment. I'm kind of prepared for anything.

What type of products are you particularly good at creating 360º views of? Do you have a specialty?

I like to think I'm pretty good at most everything but I do have my favorites: home products, accessories and antiques.  I consider myself a generalist, meaning, I like to shoot many different things and believe that it makes me better at all things.  This goes against the mainstream thinking but I've found it to be true.

Describe your ideal client for shooting a 360º view.

My ideal client for 360 is the same as with any job, someone who cares deeply about getting a beautiful result, has an open mind about getting there and is not afraid to try new things.

For 360º photography, do you prefer shooting in high volume or low volume?

It's totally product dependent, I have the capability of doing high volume if the product allows.  Crazy but not too crazy.

What kind of things do you do for fun? You know, outside of work?

I'm a true "Foodie", I love to cook. As a result I also need to spend a lot of time doing to things like skiing and playing golf, to offset my love of calories.

Who are some clients you've done work with in the past?

Lazy Susan was one client that I worked with extensively and we really helped them update and upgrade their brand.

How does your pricing work for 360º product photography?

I customize my pricing to each client. Product, volume and deadline, all are considered to come up with a method to make the project work.

What's a memorable project you've worked on in the past?

I just shot some very cool antique toys.

What's the best way for someone to get in touch with you?

Email.
