Q&A with Kelsey
How did you get into taking pictures for a living?
It feels like I've been taking photographs my entire life. It all started with a little blue rectangular Fisher Price camera. I didn't realize until later how many photos I had actually taken. I have always loved recording everything. I like to say, "I photograph, because I love." I really do love everything about life, and every detail amazes me.
I was searching for a life changing career, something that fed my creative, technical, and competitive side…and, something that made me hold onto my appreciation of life. In college, when I was told to take a class that interests me, the first thought that came to mind was photography…and, from there, I never turned back. My career began in the darkroom. I started out as a fine art photographer, which means I approach every photography shoot with an artistic eye. It was true destiny. Photography is now my sport and my art, all in one. Photography is my everything, and most of my competitive energy goes into it. I am a perfectionist, and I constantly strive to better myself and my craft. I’ve never been bored with photography. There is always something to learn, practice, or perfect.
Tell me about your 360º photography studio setup! For starters, what kind of camera do you shoot with?
I love shooting with my Canon 5d Mark IIIs, but every once in a while, I still get out my medium-format film camera. I use Hensel strobes, and various soft boxes. My big octabox is always fun, whenever I have a reason to use it! Kelsey Crews Photo has a garage studio, located in downtown Santa Barbara, California.
What type of products are you particularly good at creating 360º views of? Do you have a specialty?
With a commercial degree, from the Brooks Institute of Photography, I have experience photographing many different types of subject matter. From food, to shiny objects, to even industrial items. I've heard that I am good at styling items such as ribbon and clothing. No matter what, I don't stop until I achieve perfection.
Describe your ideal client for shooting a 360º view.
I love working with smaller companies, as the vision can be easier translated with fewer people. Always willing to work with big companies, as long as the expected outcome is clear. I'm good with people, always willing to listen to a company's main objective/goal. I like to think I can achieve anything, and make anyone happy.
For 360º photography, do you prefer shooting in high volume or low volume?
I like to work in low to medium volumes, but would never turn away high volume, as long as we've discussed a reasonable delivery date and proper compensation.
What kind of things do you do for fun? You know, outside of work?
Living in sunny Santa Barbara has made it quite easy to be an avid hiker and beach-goer. I was a swimmer growing up, so it's really nice to be around the ocean life. Can't wait to get a stand up paddle board! Also love yoga, jogging, concerts, and reading...and, believe it or not, I still photograph for fun :)
Who are some clients you've done work with in the past?
The Grapeseed Company
Dirty Dog Organics
Lilly & Louise
Santa Barbara Plastic Surgery Center
How does your pricing work for 360º product photography?
Rates vary depending on the size, the difficulty of the subject matter, the amount of retouching necessary, and the deadline. Generally, if given enough time and if the subject is of reasonable size, pricing would $50-150 per item.
What's a memorable project you've worked on in the past?
I worked on a project for the Grapeseed Company, where the final photo was included in the Artisan Group's brochure, and that went out to all of the celebrities at the Oscar's ceremony/Academy Awards. The Grapeseed Company also displays my photos at Whole Foods grocery stores, amongst other news sources and publications.
What's the best way for someone to get in touch with you?
Email and phone are both a perfect way to start. We are super organized about email, and always respond as quick as possible. We could always email, and then set up a time to talk. Otherwise, feel free to call, if that is what you prefer. Would really love to work with you!
