Q&A with Kelli

How did you get into taking pictures for a living?

I took a photography class for the first time when I was in middle school. We learned how to use the old film cameras, and I absolutely loved it! In high school, I took another film photography class that taught us how to develop our own film in the darkroom, which was fascinating. I continued studying photography when I went to college at Northern Arizona University, this time with the focus on digital.

During my four years of college, I worked as a staff photographer for NAU’s newspaper The Lumberjack, a photojournalism intern at the Arizona Daily Sun in Flagstaff, and also began doing event and food photography for businesses in the valley. When I graduated, I moved back to Phoenix and have been continuing to grow my photography business. In addition to doing my own shoots, I work part-time as an assistant photographer for Mark Skalny Photography, as well as a second shooter and office assistant for StepOnMe Wedding Photography. I’ve loved every kind of photography I have explored so far, and am excited to have added 360º photography to the list of services I can provide!

Tell me about your 360º photography studio setup! For starters, what kind of camera do you shoot with?

I shoot with a Nikon D700. My 360º photography studio is designed to capture smaller products, around shoe-size or smaller.

What type of products are you particularly good at creating 360º views of? Do you have a specialty?

Anything about the size of a shoe or smaller. I have shot things like camera equipment and geodes, and it’s been working out great!

Describe your ideal client for shooting a 360º view.

I’m open to any clients who are looking to get a cool modern addition to their sites!

For 360º photography, do you prefer shooting in high volume or low volume?

I’d say probably medium volume, so I can get them all edited and ready to go in a timely manner.

What kind of things do you do for fun? You know, outside of work?

I am obsessed with swing dancing! I go dancing at least 3 times each week, and actually end up shooting most of the swing dance events in the valley, since I’m friends with the people who run them. 🙂 It’s a blast! I can’t live without it.

Who are some clients you’ve done work with in the past?

Although I’ve done food and product shoots in the past, I have yet to have a client ask for my new 360º services. Looking forward to starting it up!

How does your pricing work for 360º product photography?

I charge on a per product basis. I’ll do the first shoot for free so I can time it and see how long it’ll take me to shoot that type of product. Once I have that information, I’ll adjust the price to be the equivalent of about $150/hour. So if it takes me 20 minutes to shoot the product, I would charge $50 per 360˚ of that type of product.

What’s a memorable project you’ve worked on in the past?

I used to collect geodes when I was in high school, so I’ve been creating 360º views of some of my favorites to use as examples on my website. Aside from 360º views, I’d say my most memorable shoot has been the Chandler SanTan Oktoberfest. I’ve shot that event two years in a row now, and have been able to get on stage to shoot the musicians in front of hundreds of fans! That always feels amazing.

What’s the best way for someone to get in touch with you?

Emails and phone calls are best! I aim to respond to either within 24 hours 🙂
